Cardiovascular Health As We Age

As people age, the risk of developing cardiovascular disease increases due to factors such as a sedentary lifestyle, poor diet, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. The declining cardiovascular health in seniors can lead to several health problems, including:
  • 1

Heart disease: It is one of the leading causes of death among seniors. As the arteries harden and become less flexible, it becomes difficult for the heart to pump blood throughout the body.

  • 2

Stroke: The risk of developing a stroke increases with age due to factors such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels.

  • 3

Peripheral artery disease (PAD): PAD is a condition where the arteries in the legs and feet become narrow, leading to decreased blood flow. This can cause leg pain and increase the risk of infection.

  • 4

Heart failure: As the heart weakens with age, it becomes difficult for it to pump blood, leading to heart failure.

It is important for seniors to take steps to maintain their cardiovascular health, such as:
  • Eating a healthy, balanced diet
  • Exercising regularly
  • Quitting smoking
  • Managing blood pressure and cholesterol levels
  • Managing diabetes if they have the condition
